Top Android device makers reportedly rigging performance test scores

Smartphone pace tests are the hottest home to a scandal over greedy performance enhancers. According to AnandTech, Samsung, HTC, LG, and Asus have all changed some of their gadgets so that they will carry out unusually well during popular benchmarks, which are often included alongside in-depth device reviews. Aside from Motorola and Apple, AnandTech writes that "literally every single [device manufacturer]" they work with has shipped or is currently shipping a phone that inflates its scores. Despite the broad statement, AnandTech only lists a few specific names, and it also would seem to exclude Nexus and Microsoft windows Phone gadgets.

The overall performance rewards were minor:

The exposure shouldn't mean much to consumers: standards are by-and-large an irrelavent statistic of raw performance, and not a statistic of how well a cellphone actually operates in day-to-day use. But they're however a program that evaluators and some customers use when evaluating a cell phone's abilities, and it seems that these producers may be expecting to provide themselves an advantage. That exercise allegedly isn't existing across the panel, however. While on certain assessments, such as AnTuTu, AnandTech discovered that every organization detailed was bolstering its ratings, it discovered that on other assessments, such as Geekbench 3, only only one program showed up to be bolstering them.

Phone manufacturers' techniques of doing this appear to be pretty simple: the os finds when a particular standard is operating, and then informs the unit's processer to instantly start doing at its top rate. Overall, AnandTech says that it doesn't even add up to much. It saw a 0 to 5 % enhancement on CPU rate, and for gadgets that also changed GPU rates of speed, no greater than a 10 % enhancement on those standards. Benchmark producers are allegedly now looking to outsmart gadgets — many by basically renaming their applications — but customers will have to take their ratings with an even bigger assisting of sodium than regular until it's obvious that these assessments can't be bested.
